Burger in Vienna have, up until very recently, been confined solely to the menus of fast-food restaurants or Irish (English, or Australian) pubs. Over the course of the last years, the yummy creations have found their place in Vienna’s culinary scene, at last.
The Viennese have taken to burgers like ducks to water and so it’s little wonder that there is a whole, creative variety of different types of burgers available throughout the city. There’s classic cheese burgers, there’s veggie burgers, and there are some extra yummy vegan burgers as well…

Beaver Brewing Company
Is there a better combination than beer and burger? Yeah – craft beer and burger! And that’s exactly what the Beaver Brewing Company specialises in. An instant success with the Viennese since they first opened, this brewery is the place to go when you really need a good burger. And a craft beer. (We did mention that before, right? Anyway. The combination is too good not to mention at least once more.) Our favourite thing besides the craft beer (see, told you!)? The monthly changing “Burger of the Month”.

Burger Bros
Tucked away under the escalator (yes, you have read that right!) the first Burger Bros location could (and very probably should) have lasted no longer than a few months before being forced to close down again due to lack of customers. The fact that people flocked to the restaurant despite its really strange location at the Hauptbahnhof just goes to show how great the burgers really are. These days, they actually have added two more locations to their portfolio and are just as lovely-tasting as ever. Success didn’t hurt the Burger Bros, and neither does the fact that you can pimp your burger with the toppings of your choice!

Burger de Ville
We don’t think it can get any more hipster than the Burger de Ville. A shiny beetle truck parked outside the equally hip 25Hours hotel is all there is to this burger restaurant, but frankly? It really doesn’t need more. The de Ville serves up a mean burger during the summer months (or, rather, whenever the Viennese weather permits). and while there may be just 7 burgers on the menu, no customer is left wanting. We love!

Burgerista
Burgerista isn’t a burger restaurant the way you might expect. Rather, it’s a burger chain you can find in some food courts in malls throughout Austria and Germany. Why it does make the list anyway? Because what the guys from Burgerista serve isn’t your everyday fast food burger, but rather a nice selection of really good burgers that are made from best ingredients and taste effing fantastic. If food court food had that quality everywhere, life would be a lot better!

Burgermacher
With handmade patties, special full grain buns and homemade dips the Burgermacher (the Burger Makers, what else?!) up the ante. With a choice between beef, chicken and veggie patties as well as single or double burgers they meet (nearly) all tastes. And with a big side of home-cut fries the world suddenly turns into a much, much better place. Yes, the selection at the Burgermacher is a bit smaller than in some other burger-specific venues (fitting, as the restaurant only seats 30), but they make up the lack in quantity with superb quantity (organic meat! locally bought!). We are delighted and would come back anytime even if they didn’t offer 25 different types of beer that perfectly round off the experience!

Flatschers
Not being specialised on burgers, this restaurants offers a mean steak, yummy fish and seafood dishes as well as a small but incredibly nice selection of some of the best burgers in town. Prices are a bit more elevated than elsewhere but the quality and service offered more than makes up for it. Guests also very much enjoy their big selection of beers as well as their incredible choice of Gin & Tonics.

Hawidere
Guests flock to the Hawidere for two reasons: craft beer or burgers. And usually, they stay for both. Unsurprisingly, really, seeing that every single one of the burgers on their really extensive menu comes with a specialised beer recommendation. The burgers themselves are super tasty, come with unique flatbread-like buns and a side of truly magical homemade steak fries. Meat and beer lovers are in heaven here, but there’s a rather big selection of vegetarian and even vegan burgers alongside the more traditional ones as well!

Le Burger
The currently 4 locations of Le Burger in Vienna are probably the best choice for anyone who loves to mix and match their own burger. While there is a mouthwateringly good selection of burgers on the menu, guests also have the opportunity to create their very own favourite burger from scratch. OMNOM Burger
The name really says it all – the burgers here will make you go om-nom-nom-nom! As you can imagine, the two OMNOM restaurants are favourites with locals and so you should always make sure to call ahead and book a table as both venues are really, really small. This, by the way, is what makes us love this restaurant even more: the fact that you can literally watch how your burgers are made as the kitchen is never really far from your table. Another thing we love? The incredibly crunchy fries! Om-nom-nom-nom!

Rinderwahn
Rinderwahn translates to Mad Cow Disease and, honestly, that’s all you need to know about this restaurant 😉 It’s crazy nice, it’s crazy fun (so many puns!), and it’s crazy good! The burger selection is vast and spans everything from classic cheese burger to the Vain Rooster Burger, a chicken burger with peanut butter and alpine cheese. And, of course, there’s a veggie burger too. Oh, and really great salads. And truly amazing fries. Highly recommended!

Said the Butcher to the Cow
A restaurant with the tagline “Burgers. Gin. Cheesecake.” can’t be a bad choice, can it? Indeed, it can’t! It actually is the perfect choice for everyone looking for a more sophisticated dining experience (the dishes might look like paper plates, but they really are not), creative and unique combinations (octopus burger, anyone?!), and really excellent quality. And because it is the perfect choice for burger, gin, and cheesecake lovers, tables tend to be rather full, so call ahead and book a table if you plan on spending the evening there!

Schrnk
Located right at the Mariahilfer Straße, Vienna’s most famous shopping street, this restaurant derives its rather special name from the Schrank (engl. cupboard) that is hanging from the ceiling. Yes. A cupboard. Screwed to the ceiling. But then again, what else do you expect of any venue located in Vienna’s hipster hotspot #1? Right. Moving on. Except for that one detail, the Schrnk isn’t really that off the chart. It’s nice, it’s light, it’s airy. It has a great reputation amongst people with kids for the way they make families feel welcome. And it has an even better reputation for their foods. Burgers and fries are to die for, as are all the other dishes on the menu. We love the mixture of finger-food, pasta, and street-food offered there. And we love the fact that it is all (yes, even the pasta!) made right there in the restaurant even more!

Smokey’s
If you love fries, chips and salads, Smokey’s is your place. No, really. It should go without saying that any restaurant on this list does serve great burgers, so let’s talk sides for a second. We cannot, absolutely cannot, recommend Smokey’s chips (or crisps, if you’re a Brit) enough. They are legend! Absolute scenes! Anyway. Burgers. Yes. Smokey’s does offer a stunning variety of burgers, and what’s more – they encourage you to customise to your heart’s content. You want no bun, but extra mint-sauce and a dollop of onion jam? No worries, they’ve got you covered! And they do great sandwiches and soups as well.

Swing Kitchen
Let’s have a few facts first: Schillinger’s Swing Kitchen was the first vegan burger restaurant in the city when it first opened a few years ago. Almost anybody laughed when the owner announced that he dreamed of getting bigger than other fast food burger venues – getting big with a full-on vegan menu, and vegan burgers in particular? Yeah, dream on, mate. Fast forward a handful of years and there currently are 5 Swing Kitchen venues in Vienna, each of them better frequented than the one that came before. So vegan burgers?! Yes! Given the choice, this meat-lover will always pick a Swing Kitchen Chili Burger over anything else the city has to offer. Plus – the fries are to die for. As is the tiramisu. And let’s not talk about the big salads, the yummy wraps, the delicious “chicken” nuggets, or the cakes. This is culinary heaven right here!

Teddy’s American Diner
Close your eyes for a moment and think about the quintessential American diner for a moment. Have you got it? Okay. Did you imagine red and white, squeaky, somewhat plastic-y chairs and benches? Check. Burgers and hotdogs served in napkin-covered baskets? Check. Mirrors and signs mounted to the walls? Check. Tall milkshake glasses topped with a swirl of whipped cream and a candied cherry? Check. Teddy’s American diner brings the best of 50s US dining culture to Vienna, and we couldn’t love it more. The burgers are great, but ultimately it’s the whole experience that will make you want to come back again and again!

Weinschenke
One of the places where you’d least expect to be served truly excellent burgers is a restaurant called Weinschenke, i.e. winery. And yet – it does. The Weinschenke has a extensive, really amazing selection of burgers, and one that manages to surprise even the most experienced of taste-buds. Just imagine that first bite of the Billy the Kid: a beef patty topped with salad, cucumber, cranberry-whiskey sauce, a double helping of smoked cheese, red onions, bacon and a good helping of wild mushroom ragout. Sounds mouthwateringly good, doesn’t it?!
